A promising clinical trial of a procedure has led German scientists to theorise that patches of lab-grown muscle could be used to mend damaged hearts, potentially saving millions of people worldwide who have heart failure.

For this ongoing trial, patches of muscle were grown from another person’s stem cells in a lab and then grafted onto the beating hearts of 15 patients with the condition.
Researchers have reported that one has already benefited from the procedure, and has shown no side effects, which has bought her time to wait for a heart transplant.
