Domingos Alves de Sousa Reserva Pessoal 2015 (red from the Douro, produced by Domingos Alves de Sousa with oenology by Tiago Alves de Sousa), Pai Chão Grande Reserva 2022 (white from Alentejo produced by Adega Mayor with oenology by Carlos Rodrigues), Costa Boal Homenagem by António Boal Reserva 2023 (rosé from the Douro by Costa Boal Family Estates with oenology by Paulo Nunes) and José Maria da Fonseca Moscatel de Setúbal Superior 1924 (Moscatel de Setúbal by José Maria da Fonseca with oenology by Domingos Soares Franco) were the wines distinguished, according to the press release from Essência do Vinho.
The evaluation included 65 samples, obtained from a pre-selection carried out by Revista de Vinhos, taking into account the wines that tasters considered to be the most exciting of 2024, the press release points out.
In a blind tasting, without prior knowledge of the wines, the "TOP 10" jury brought together fifty tasters - journalists, critics, sommeliers and importers - from a total of 14 nationalities: Brazil, Denmark, Spain, United States, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Ukraine and Portugal, the statement adds.
Quoted in the press release, the founder of Essência Company, Nuno Guedes Vaz Pires highlighted that “the arrival in Portugal of a panel of leading figures in the wine sector is an essential investment for the country’s projection”.
“More than just being judges on the Top 10 Portuguese Wines, these experts have the opportunity to explore different regions, participate in other tastings and interact directly with producers and winemakers. This direct contact generates a valuable and lasting impact, with obvious benefits for the sector,” he said.
Among the red wines, the highest scorer was Domingos Alves de Sousa Reserva Pessoal 2015, from Douro, followed by Casa da Passarella Villa Oliveira Vinha Centenária Pai d´Aviz 2018 (Dão) and Casa da Atela Anabela Grande Reserva 2019 (Tejo), while among the whites, the preference fell on Pai Chão Grande Reserva 2022 (Alentejo Regional), followed by Quinta de San Michel A Névoa de Janas 2020 (Lisbon) and Crosta Calcária dos Profetas 2023 (DOP Madeirense).
