In an institutional meeting that took place at the Seville City Council, following those previously held in Huelva and Faro, the three mayors agreed to travel to Brussels soon in order to try to bring forward the construction deadlines for this international railway line.

Within the scope of the 35th Luso-Spanish Summit, held in Faro in October 2023, the governments of both countries highlighted the importance of carrying out rigorous studies of mobility flows and cost-benefit analyses as a fundamental condition for the advancement of this project.

The mayors of the three cities recognise these studies as essential to determine the economic, environmental and social viability of the high-speed rail connection and to plan efficient integration with the national rail networks and the trans-European transport network, but they call on national and EU authorities to recognise this project as a European priority to be advanced immediately, mobilising financial resources in order to immediately begin studies and preliminary work, in particular on the connection between Seville and Huelva.

High Speed Summit

“The Faro – Huelva – Seville connection is more than a regional necessity, it represents a historic opportunity to transform the Algarve and Andalusia regions into strategic gateways to Africa, Latin America and the rest of Europe”, state the mayors who signed this agreement.

“It is through the existence of a modern and sustainable infrastructure that the tourist, industrial and commercial potential of our regions can be fully developed, simultaneously promoting social and territorial cohesion”, they add.

For the Municipality of Faro, “this is an investment in our future – an investment that allows us to overcome our peripheral geographical condition and brings us closer to the European economic centre, while at the same time taking fundamental steps to achieve the environmental goals of decarbonisation”.

“The future we want is being prepared today, and that is why we must demand political and financial support to make it move forward.”
