As a publication that supports all business in Portugal and the tourism industry, as well as our UK readers, the UK citizens based in the Algarve, the UK citizens (and citizens of other nationalities) employed in the tourist industry and the UK citizens that love to visit the Algarve each year we want to help to rectify this situation.
As such we have launched this campaign to raise awareness of the unique Portuguese situation and put forward logical reasoning as to why the UK government should change their mind.
We are asking our readers and those that support the changing of the decision of moving Portugal off the green list to send a lobby letter to their local MP.
As well as you our readers supporting the campaign, we at The Portugal News will also be working to highlight the campaign through letters to Boris Johnson and other key members of the British government, contact with the Portuguese authorities and sharing the campaign across our social media platforms with more than 75,000 followers. We will also be publishing regular updates in our printed newspaper which reaches 60,000 people a week and 600,000 unique visitors to our website each month.
The Portugal News is committed to working with the local community and businesses to ensure that Portugal continues to be recognised as the safe destination that it always has been and continues to be.

I would suggest that as a medium for reporting the latest news you remain an impartial observer and stick to reporting facts. Why not spend a little time reviewing the rational for the decision, reviewing statistics and challenging through objective truths. You are wasting your and my time with amateur lobbying campaigns.

Sorry but Portugal only has itself to blame for this. All this unnecessary and very expensive testing and it's now INCREASING in the Algarve. Keep publishing figures of people who are not even ill. Publishing the Rt rate at above 1 what do you expect but to be taken off the green list. It isn't the UK government you should be lobbying it's the Portuguese government you should be having a go at. Stop all this stupid testing and get on with things. There is hardly anyone in Hospital and virtually no deaths. Just STOP testing and you might get back to normal.

We have been in Lagos since the start of the pandemic its much safer than the uk no protests marches etc every one sticks to the covid rules it feels very safe & the vaccine program is at a pace my wife and I have had it stay safe everyone see you on the beech ????

The Americans have the lowest number of cases of covid per capita and we are still on the no travel list for Portugal. I am Irish living in the US with lots of family in Portugal and my son has a US passport so second Summer in a row we cannot visit. Looks like we are canceling everything again. Nothing is making any sense to me. Everyone traveled for the football and now we are all paying the price.

I do not understand the lack of logic, if everyone travelling between countries had a negative covid test what is the issue!! Keep the economy going and control the flow of people through testing, or are the governments saying that testing is unreliable??

Martin’s comment is spot on I think. The Portuguese government has been a leader in promoting Covid hysteria and fear so they really only have themselves to blame. If they want to get back to normal how about lifting the mask mandates which are not backed by the science. That would be a good campaign for The Portugal News that I could support!

I am currently near Cascais. The Portugese people follow the rules unlike the UK as our government give very mixed messages leaving it open to interpretation. I feel much safer here than in the UK as everyone even in the streets are wearing masks. Observation while waiting to fly from Luton airport and on the plane it was amazing to notice how many men were not wearing masks or had them hanging off their ears like earings or under their chins or noses while every female wore one. Without being sexist the uk men need to get the message the Portugese men do not have this problem they wear their masks and keep us all safe.

As long as the rate of infection stays high in any part of Portugal then do not expect to go on the green list. Arguments such as “numbers are low in the algarve” are useless as there is no block on the movement of people within portugal. I do fear numbers will rise further as the Portuguese government are not exercising any control on movement from within the Schengen zone - expect a large influx of French , Dutch, Spanish , German tourists by road all from higher infection areas - I fear portugal will not be back on the green list during this summer

Portugal only has itself to blame. Short term greed to invite thousands of yobs in for a football game with no relevance to the Portuguese community was bonkers. Even Boris Johnson wasn’t so stupid and that is a low bar. Frankly, the U.K. made a mistake by having a green list at all at this stage and have them mishandled it with typical aplomb. It’s hilarious reading all these stories of superior behaviour in Portugal. Since the green list there has been a distinguishable deterioration as all the wealthy and vaccinated Brits arrived with their LV bags and Ralph Lauren bedecked children. Add in the vacuous B list footballers and the place has gone downhill dramatically with absolutely zero social distancing. Please stay on the Amber list.

It should be the UK on Portugal's amber list, not the opposite. They wear no masks, don't care about social distancing, always drinking in mass gatherings, etc. And still have the cheek to say that there's no science to back it up. Hahaha, pathetic! There's a reason as to why all the new variants are being imported from the UK in Europe, and nowhere else.
On the very same day that Cheisea and Man City fans were arriving in Porto for the Champions League final, France and Germany were blocking people from entering from the UK because of the new Indian variant which is rampant across the UK. No-one in Europe has patience to deal with the Brits anymore, Portugal is an exception, but by the looks of things the UK seems bent on making an enemy out of everyone in Europe.

As long as we can keep working towards reducing the chances of someone's mother or grandfather dying due to completely avoidable and unnecessary situations, I will keep supporting travel bans, mask wearing, and social limitations.
If you want stuff to open back up, and get a semblance of normalcy soon, let them close instead of trying this drip-technique, which will only prolong the situation for EVERYONE.
I rather play on the safe side and give up on some pleasures if it has the slightest chance of saving someone else's life.
Tell yourself whatever you want, I doubt you'll find an actual argument towards the morality of doing otherwise.

Would you go to Mars with no helmet for a few seconds because it has an atmosphere an the moon doesn't?
I must say I'm disappointed to see a news source such as lobbying for a cause fundamented by economics and politics, and not by science and what is known (or not) not be true.

1 Many did NOT wear masks
2Many wore masks below their noses
Please stop this ridiculous campaign and start promoting new ways for Portugal to reduce it's over reliance on tourism,

So a senior Cabinet Minister, one Michael Gove, is a big Chelsea fan and would love to see his team in the Champions league final. On 15th May it is announced the final is to be moved from Turkey to Portugal. On the 17th May Portugal is the only European country to be on the UK green list. On 29th May Michael Gove goes to the final in Porto. Less than one week later Portugal is removed from the green list.

I’m shocked to hear all the negative comments about UK tourists, i get that Portugal are unhappy with the UK government (we are too) but don’t take it out on the people who are willing to spend their hard earned cash on supporting the recovery of your economy. The highly respected Spi-M ofWarwick University today released a forecast that the Covid Delta variant, which is 40% more transmissable than variant Alpha, is virtually unstoppable and is likely to result soon in 6,000 hospital admissions a day. Another authority considered this to be conservatively low : with 10,000 being more likely.
P.M. Boris is to be congratulated on protecting the Portuguese people from the import by British voyagers of this new pestilence but he should go further and place all European desinations on the red list thus restoring the English Channel as a traditional bulwark against disease.

Current restrictions probably wise for both countries considering developments of pandemic , that both tourists and host workers are mostly not completely vaccinated and testing is only a partial solution.
Understandable that economic necessity need portugal to be open for business.
The real target should be the eu for firstly failing to obtain early supplies of sufficient vaccine and not providing emergency support for tourism dependent regions.
Many northern members have been much less affected for instance german manufacturers. The trumpeted eu reconstruction fund is inadequate and long term much being loans and requiring co investment and eu approved projects.

I returned from an all inclusive hotel in Albufiera. I applaud the British Government for putting an end to the massacre and danger I have witnessed and we Portugal residents, are being exposed to since opening our border to the UK. I have witnessed no mask, no social distancing, people drinking until vomiting ( right in front of the restaurant while we were having lunch). Then came the fights every night with chairs flying. We did not feel safe. I do not blame the British people. its expected that people party on vacation but without security guards they behaved like animals. The problem is the fault of the hotels that have no security guards. not even 1 person to enforce the rules. Shame on the Portugal hotels that have opened without any protection for their guests. It has become apparent that the hotels only care about money at the risk of safety and health. Shame on the Portuguese government for allowing this. Thank you Mr Boris for taking charge
