According to a quick estimate by the European Union (EU)
statistics service, the rise in inflation - as measured by the harmonised
consumer price index - continues to be driven by the year-on-year increase in
prices in the energy sector (41.9% compared to 39.1% in May), followed by food,
alcohol and tobacco (8.9%, compared to 7.5% in May), non-energy industrial
goods (4.3%, compared to 4.2 %) and services (3.4%, down from 3.5% in May).
The inflation rate in the euro area and in the EU has been
accelerating since June 2021, driven by rising energy prices, and reaching
record levels since November.
