This campaign, involving the National Road Safety Authority
(ANSR), the National Republican Guard (GNR) and the Public Security Police
(PSP), took place between 3 and 10 of October and aimed to alert drivers to the
serious consequences of using a mobile phone while driving.
During the operations of the Security Forces, in this
period, 57,840 vehicles were inspected in person.
In a statement, the authorities refer to having sensitised
757 drivers and passengers, to whom several messages were sent warning of the
dangers of using mobile phones while driving, namely about the increase in
reaction time to unforeseen situations, which is greater than the effect of a
blood alcohol level of 0.8 g/l.
During the campaign period, 2,769 accidents were recorded
(122 less than in the same period), resulting in 15 fatalities (plus six), 51
serious injuries (minus one) and 878 minor injuries (minus 65).
Accidents with fatalities occurred in the districts of Braga
(2), Bragança, Viana do Castelo, Porto, Aveiro, Santarém (2), Lisbon, Setúbal
(2) and Faro (3).

Yes there should have been more tickets as this is an addiction all over the world.
People cannot put their phones down and cause accidents that kill and injure people tearing families apart. It should be jail time, a hefty fine, driving class of 8 hours on 2 different days and second offense a six month driver's license suspension because it's just like drunk driving, you're NOT paying attention.
The Police need to get serious about this to PROTECT those that DON'T break the law; you can't replace dead people!
