In a statement, the organisation defends the amendment of
article 38 of the Highway Code, “in order to allow the possibility of a motor
vehicle crossing a continuous line when there are safety conditions to overtake
a cyclist circulating in front of it at a slower pace”.
The Federation explains that the fact that this is currently
prohibited creates “potential conditions of pressure and conflict between motor
vehicle drivers and cyclists”.
Another measure involves matching the sign D7a - Compulsory
Track for Velocipedes - to the sign D6 - Via Reserved for Public Transport Vehicles,
with the Federation warning of the "risks" of "forcing an
experienced cyclist in training or a group of cyclists in the under the same
circumstances to cycle on cycle paths”.
How about we require the CYCLISTS to ride in single file instead of two or three abreast? I've encountered numerous times when cyclists won't return to single file to let cars or motorcycles pass them more easily and safely. Instead, they continue to take the entire lane and get angry and wave me furiously to pass when it's not as safe to do so. Their returning to single file would be much safer for everyone when traffic approaches from behind.

Sadly, there are many cyclists whose brains rest on their saddles.

Cyclists think they own the road, they have no respect for road safety, it should be compulsory to ride single file!

Whoops, I thought I was already able to overtake a cyclist on a continuous white line (with enough clearance of course). I assumed that if the vehicle was travelling below a certain speed (e.g. a cyclist) this was already allowed.
Portugal is full of contradictions it seems. I still like living here though :-)
