“In the year 2022, in the set of tourist accommodation establishments (hotels, apartment hotels, tourist apartments, inns, rural tourism units, and local accommodation units) in the Azores, 3,215.4 thousand overnight stays were recorded, a higher figure by 65.7% compared to the year 2021”, reads a publication posted on the SREA website.

According to data from the Azores Regional Statistics Service, the value for 2022 is the highest since there have been records, surpassing the 2019 record (3,009,385 overnight stays), by 6.8%.

Overnight stays from tourists residing abroad (1,945.4 thousand) more than doubled compared to the same period last year (149.4%), surpassing those of tourists residing in Portugal (1,270.0 thousand), which also registered an increase, but less accentuated (9.4%).

The year-on-year change in overnight stays was, even so, below that registered at the national level (86.3%).

The number of guests (1,014.7 thousand) showed “a positive annual rate of change of 62.7%”.

Total income from hotel establishments rose 86.9%, registering in 2022 an amount in excess of 126.4 million euros.



All the islands registered an increase in overnight stays in 2022, with the most accentuated increases being seen on the islands of Terceira (78.6%), São Miguel (71.4%), and Corvo (58.5%).

“The island of São Miguel, with 1,345.9 thousand overnight stays, concentrated 68.7% of the total overnight stays, followed by Terceira with 327.0 thousand overnight stays (16.7%), Faial with 120.2 thousand overnight stays (6.1%) and Pico with 67.7 thousand overnight stays (3.5%)”, adds SREA.
