In September 2020, there were 159 public and 231 private schools in Lisbon, according to the new DGEEC tool that allows you to analyse statistical information from pre-school to secondary education.
Still, in the Lisbon region, Cascais also has more private establishments (86) than public ones (64). Then there are municipalities like Almada or Amadora, where there are as many public and private schools (in Almada, for example, there were 61 public and 60 private in the 2020/2021 school year).
These districts have registered a decrease in educational establishments over the last few years, following the national trend.
Between 2013 and 2020, around 1,000 public schools across the country closed, from 6,575 to 5,587.
The reduction was much more tenuous in private education and affected only those dependent on the State: In 2013 there were 2,773 private establishments and, after seven years, there were 2,654.
However, during this period, independent private schools increased from 1,289 to 1,293 (plus four).
The new DGEEC tool provides time series of statistical data on students, human resources, and education and training establishments.
