At the press conference held after the meeting of the Superior Council for Internal Security, where the Annual Internal Security Report (RASI) for 2022 was analysed, minister José Luís Carneiro stated that last year there were 130,102 road accidents, an additional 14,855 accidents when compared to 2021 (+12.9%).
However, when compared to 2019, since 2020 and 2021 were years marked by restrictions on circulation due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there were 11,757 fewer accidents (-8.3%), said the Minister of Internal Administration.
These data, which appear in the RASI that will be handed over to the Assembly of the Republic on Friday, also show that 474 people died on the roads in 2022, 18.2% more than in 2021, which translates into 73 fatalities, but compared to 2019, there were 8.8% less, that is, 46 less fatalities, according to the official.
José Luís Carneiro also said that accidents in 2022 caused 2,429 serious injuries, 5.7% more than in 2021 (+132), and compared to 2019 there were 4.1% less than in 2019.
Last year, 40,100 people suffered minor injuries in disasters, 11.8% more than in 2021 and 10.8% less than in 2019.
