According to this study by the consultancy Informa D&B on the national hotel sector, the value achieved in 2022 also exceeds by 16.5% what had been recorded in 2019, before the arrival of the pandemic in Portugal.
This study, which covered hotels, local accommodation units, aparthotels, tourist apartments, rural tourism establishments and housing, tourist villages, Pousadas and the 'Quintas da Madeira', shows that the number of guests and overnight stays also grew in the last year compared to the previous year.
According to Publituris, with regard to guests, there was an increase of 83.3%, accounting for just over 26.5 million guests in national tourist accommodation units, while the total number of overnight stays stood at 69.5 million, which also translates into a significant increase, which reached 86%.
“Local accommodation establishments were the ones that showed the highest percentage growth in number of guests, while in overnight stays the biggest growth corresponded to hotels”, and it was also in this type of accommodation that, in absolute terms, the highest number of guests was recorded, with 17.5 million, corresponding to 66% of the total. Overnight stays in hotels totalled 42.2 million, representing around 61% of the total.
Foreign visitors
By markets, the sectoral study by Informa D&B found that national tourists were responsible for around 23 million overnight stays, around a third of the total and 23% more than in 2021, while the remaining overnight stays were the responsibility of foreign tourists, corresponding to to a growth of 150%.
“Among foreigners, the biggest increases were registered among residents of the United States (+327%), Brazil (+265%) and United Kingdom (+192%). The British remained the most important foreign customers, representing 13% of overnight stays, ahead of Germans and Spaniards”, adds the study.
