The operation takes place throughout mainland Portugal and inspection is oriented towards the most critical roads under the responsibility of the GNR and where there are the most accidents and violations of speed limits.
In a statement, the GNR explains that this operation takes place within the scope of the European Network of Traffic Police (RoadPol), an organization created by traffic police in Europe to improve road safety and compliance with road rules and of which the GNR became a member in 2021.
With this action, integrated in RoadPol's annual planning, the GNR intends to "raise society's awareness of safer behaviour on the part of drivers and passengers", promoting road safety and the safeguarding of human lives.
Here's an idea for GNR. Focus area one: Start giving tickets to people not using indicators. Focus are two: Start giving tickets to people not respecting safe distance. Focus are three: Start giving tickets to people jumping the queue (which is part of the reason why Portuguese are deadly afraid to leave room to the car in front). Solve these three issues and speed in itself is no issue.
