According to TasteAtlas, Pastel de Belém and Pastel de Nata are not the same thing. The Pastel de Belém won the award for best dessert in the world, while Pastel de Nata won the silver medal in this competition promoted by the guide. But not everyone agreed with this first place.
“Portugal copied it from Turkey”, was the comment of a user on Facebook, regarding the TasteAtlas publication, which chooses Pastel de Belém as the best dessert in the world. This user was not the only one to criticise the ranking. “Any cake from Italy, France, Brazil, Spain and even some regions of Germany, Poland and Czechia is better than this”.
The Pastel de Belém award comes just days after Portuguese cuisine was considered the fourth best in the world. According to RFM, the gastronomic guide considered that migas, cod, francesinha, feijoada, seafood rice and açorda are some of the best Portuguese dishes. At the top of the table of the best cuisines in the world was Italy, followed by Japan and Greece.
They are right! Indeed, the original pastel version (“Turkish (or is it Greek? I am confused…) Delight”) originated in Turkey…! Anyone can agree to that! Also common knowledge: Croissant originated in China (ever heard of dumpling? Duh….). Well in fact, anything can be traced back to China! In 3000 bc, croissant and pastel de nata parties were all the rage…

Leave us alone, why are people always picking g on Portugal.
It's ridiculous, pasties de Belem were invented in a convent by monks like a lot of other desserts of Portuguese origin.
Don't steal from us get your own.
It's trendy to be against us.
Shove it and get Informed.

Lying Turks, this accusation is rich coming from the people who stole baklava from the Greeks and knefeh from the Lebanese.

Yes, the Turkish tends to say that quite a lot. Even croissants came from turky as well. Perhaps even picorino and cheddar cheese. That man is insane and needs medical atension asap.

Sure did! Turks always had a two faced reputation since the middle ages. Not to be trusted.

Guys, please, feijoada is not a Portuguese dish, feijoada is Brazilian!

For goodness sake Maria, get a grip! It's just a pastry, foods have travelled, and been copied, and stolen, and reinvented forever. Jeez, imagine needing a safe space over something this ridiculously silly.

Yuck I’m probably in the minority, but Portugal doesn’t have great food, and their desserts are so nasty. Give me anything from Austria, France, Italy, India, Morocco, Thailand or Mexico please! I didn’t move here for their food. Portugal is a wonderful country, but food wise nope.

Not a surprise: Portugal has virtually nothing original. When we study the roots of their gastronomy, it is almost everything or stolen from others (this happened a lot in the time of the colonisation), or implemented by more powerful countries (like Porto wine). Some exception are in Porto, they have a very interesting variety related to the time they resisted to war.

Baklava is from Syria, not Greek. Since middle east countries, and east Europe was under the ruling of Ottoman Empire for 450 years which is the mother of Turkey, Turkish cuisine is the mixture of the meal culture of those countries . Those who try to humiliate Turks , should visit Turkey to taste the local pastries.

Portuguese cuisine and especially their desserts are amazingly delicious, people who say otherwise obviously don't have a good taste palette in their mouths.

I've sent a comment but of course it hasn't been published... Must of made too much sense.
Anyway, the level of pathetic ignorance and bare faced lies from SOME of the Anglo-Saxons and their descendants on this thread is laughable. People with literally no food culture whatsoever worth mentioning outside food created by African-Americans, Mexicans and Italians. Even the burgers and cheese come from the Germans! And the British hahaha I live here and the food is bearable at most! Crude and basic in most cases. Battered fish came from the Jews escaping Portugal. Had all the spices but have never used them in their lives!
I could go on but what's the point. As for the Turks, there's obviously deep psychological problems and a huge identity crisis where you have to claim to have invented all the food in the world and that everyone stole from you when you took most dishes from neighbouring countries and the Greeks make most foods better than you except for kebabs.
