According to Executive Digest, the Portuguese High Commission for Migration, in elections for the Assembly of the Republic and Legislative Assemblies of the Autonomous Regions, Brazilian citizens holding the Statute of Equal Political Rights (Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Consultation between the Portuguese Republic and the Federative Republic of Brazil, signed in Porto Seguro, on April 22, 2000) can vote.
In other words, in the March legislative elections only foreigners residing in Portugal with Brazilian nationality, covered by the aforementioned statute, will be able to vote.
However, if we are talking about municipal (local) elections, the reality is different.
In this case, all Portuguese citizens can vote (and also Brazilian citizens with the status of equal political rights, but also citizens of the following countries:
- Member States of the European Union (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania and Sweden);
- United Kingdom, with residence prior to Brexit;
- Brazil (without equal status) and Cape Verde with legal residence in Portugal for more than two years;
- Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Island, Norway, New Zealand, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela with legal residence in Portugal for more than three years.
Can I vote in Portuguese elections?
The Portuguese legislative election scheduled for March 10 2024, is already on the horizon. It is known that Portuguese citizens can vote from the age of 18, through (automatic) voter registration, but what about foreigners residing in Portugal?
