In the annual report on road accidents, inspection, and administrative offenses in 2023, ANSR indicates that 8,936 accidents involving motorcycles occurred, 25.8% more compared to 2019 and 16.4% more compared to 2022. In 2019 there were 7,101 accidents involving this type of vehicle and in 2022 there were 7,675.

Accidents involving bicycles, which include bicycles and scooters, also increased by 38.2% compared to 2019 and 8.1% compared to 2022, with 3,239 accidents involving this type of vehicle in 2023, while in 2022 there were 2,995 and in 2019 2,344.

In the report, ANSR makes a comparison with 2019, taking into account that this is the reference year for monitoring the targets for reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries by 2030 set by the European Commission and Portugal.

The report also states that 124 people died due to motorcycle accidents in 2023, 25.3% more than in 2022 (99) and 33.3% more compared to 2019 (93).

Deaths following bicycle and scooter disasters totalled 26 last year, an increase of 36.8% compared to 2022, when there were 19 and 30% more compared to 2019 (20).

According to ANSR, last year 766 people were seriously injured in motorcycle accidents, 36.3% more than in 2022, when 562 were injured, while in 2019 520 people were seriously injured.

In relation to bicycles, 163 people were seriously injured in 2023 (11.6 more than in 2002), 146 in 2022, and 112 in 2019.

The trend is identical for minor injuries, where 8,384 people suffered minor injuries in motorcycle accidents last year (15.8 more than in 2022), 7,242 in 2022, and 6,737 in 2019.

ANSR also says that 2,983 people were injured in bicycle accidents last year, 2,717 in 2022, and 2,104 in 2019.

The ANSR report concluded that almost 35,000 road accidents were recorded last year and caused 468 deaths, 2,437 serious injuries, and 41,058 minor injuries, an increase in all indicators compared to 2022.
