The Government has signed agreements with more than 80 municipalities in the Alentejo, Algarve, Centre, and North for the construction or rehabilitation of 2,871 homes for vulnerable families, representing an investment of €328 million.

The Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, explained that the signing of all the contracts “is very important”, because “it allows each of the municipalities to initiate all procedures, namely competitive bidding, to move forward with the work".

"In these contracts, we are talking about €328 million, almost 3,000 homes, but, next week, on the 20th, with Lisbon, after going to Porto, Coimbra, Faro, we will complete this entire process and in the end, we are talking about 26,000 homes, 13,000 that came before, plus now these 13,000 that we are concluding", he said.

The goal, highlighted by the government official, is to reach the 26 thousand homes rehabilitated or built that Portugal committed to under the PRR, which must be inhabited by the respective selected families by June 30, 2026, in a global investment of 1.8 billion euros.

Portugal has to guarantee that, on that date, there are “families living in these houses”, under penalty of losing funding: “Otherwise we will not meet the target and we need to return funds to Europe and that cannot happen”, said Miguel Pinto Luz.

“This government does not accept this happening and, therefore, is here trying to accelerate” the implementation of the PRR in this area of housing, said the minister, also alluding to several other measures already announced by the executive in this area, such as “the IMT youth” or changes “to the IRS, the local accommodation law, the expiry of rent support and coercive leasing”.
