The coin, designed by artist Gonçalo Viana, is only valid in Portugal and pays tribute to Ulysses thanks to his links to Lisbon.
The mythical hero is best known for his starring role in Homer's Odyssey, and while there is no evidence that he actually existed, it has been suggested that he founded the city of Lisbon while returning home from the Trojan War.
The front of the coin depicts Ulysses tied to a ship, on the reverse of the coin he is shown again, but this time with a bow and arrow.
