“This is the first solar project in Portugal, with a size of almost 50 megawatts, which could theoretically power 60 thousand families”, said CEO João Manso Neto, at the inauguration ceremony.

Highlighting that it is a large, but not gigantic, park, the manager was in favour of a “mix of medium-sized projects and decentralized energy projects, which is an area that we use a lot”.

The Tábua Solar Photovoltaic Plant occupies an area of over 90 hectares in the parish of São João da Boa Vista, with 90 thousand photovoltaic modules, with the capacity to supply 60 thousand families, which will prevent the emission of 13,200 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually.

In statements to the Lusa news agency, João Manso Neto said that the company's main focus is on decentralized energy to be produced in schools, factories and workshops, “in smaller projects, but with great potential”.

According to him, Greenvolt currently has a portfolio of projects of around 200 megawatts underway, almost double the Tábua plant, which represents an investment of 140 million euros.

At the international level, the company led by João Manso Neto makes investment strategies and project models dependent on the country, highlighting that in countries such as Poland, in Eastern Europe, “there is room for larger projects with batteries or wind”.

“Portugal and Spain are a bit congested for large-scale projects and there are fewer possibilities, but there is great potential in other countries,” he said.

The CEO of Greenvolt told Lusa that he believes that Portugal will have opportunities “sooner than we think, in the battery sector, which the country needs to store energy during the day.”

“We believe that this will grow more than expected and if there is a regulated and attractive remuneration system, I would say that Portugal has the conditions,” stressed João Manso Neto, mentioning that the company currently has projects underway in Hungary, Poland and the United Kingdom.

The manager believes that Portugal cannot run the risk of “having too much sun at certain times and wasting energy that cannot be consumed” and could be stored.

In the area of solar renewable energy, Greenvolt is currently implementing a solar plant in Águeda, in the district of Aveiro, slightly larger than the one in Tábua, which will be completed and in operation in 2025, representing an investment of 50 million euros.
