According to tourism activity statistics released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), the growth in revenue from January to November reflected a 4.1% increase in overnight stays in this period, with overnight stays by non-residents growing by 4. 8%, while those of residents registered lower growth (+2.5%).
During the period, the average revenue per available room (RevPAR) reached €72.0 and the average revenue per occupied room (ADR) was €121.60, which corresponds to annual growth of 7.0% and 6.5%, respectively.
Considering only the month of November, total revenues reached €385.9 million and accommodation revenues totalled €285.3 million, reflecting growth of 16.7% in both (+10.0% and +10.9% in October, in the same order).
In November, the Greater Lisbon region contributed the most to overall revenue (39.4% of total revenue and 42.1% of accommodation revenue), followed by the North (16.8% and 16.9% respectively) and the Autonomous Region of Madeira (14.3% and 13.6%, in the same order).
All regions recorded growth in earnings, with the largest increases occurring in the Center (+31.4% in total earnings and +31.9% in pension earnings) and Madeira (+26.3% and +28.8%, respectively).
Revenue growth was also transversal to the three accommodation segments in November: In the hotel industry, total and room revenues (weights of 88.0% and 86.3% in total tourist accommodation, respectively) both increased by 17. 0%, while in local accommodation establishments, there were increases of 12.3% in total revenue and 12.7% in room revenue (shares of 8.7% and 10.5%, respectively).
In rural and residential tourism (representation of 3.3% and 3.2%, in the same order), the increases were 23.2% and 25.0%, respectively.
Overnight stays
In the month under analysis, the tourist accommodation sector registered 2.2 million guests (+14.0%) and 5.0 million overnight stays (+9.8%).
The municipality of Lisbon accounted for 23.5% of the total number of overnight stays, reaching 1.2 million (+3.6%, after +1.7% in October), with overnight stays by residents increasing by 8.9% and those by non-residents increasing by 2.7%. This municipality accounted for 29.2% of all overnight stays by non-residents in November.
Funchal was the second municipality with the highest number of overnight stays (486.6 thousand overnight stays, a weight of 9.7%) and registered growth of 3.6% (+1.1% in October). According to the INE, overnight stays by residents registered a “significant increase” (+44.2%), while those by non-residents decreased by 1.5%, with this municipality accounting for 12.2% of the total number of overnight stays by non-residents in November.
In Porto, overnight stays totalled 446.9 thousand (8.9% of the total), and a growth of 16.3% was observed (+4.5% in October), with the contribution of overnight stays by residents (+26.8%) and non-residents (+13.8%).
In turn, Albufeira (256.8 thousand overnight stays, weight of 5.1%) showed a decrease of 5.4% (-2.2% in October), driven by non-residents (-6.9%), given that overnight stays by residents increased by 4.6%.
In all 10 municipalities with the highest number of overnight stays in November, overnight stays by non-residents exceeded those by residents.
