According to Jornal de Negócios, which relies on the aforementioned study, in 2023, the percentage of foreigners in the Portuguese population as a whole did not exceed 10.8%, being the 14th lowest among OECD members. A value below the average for the countries in the organization (14.7%).
It is worth noting, however, that the weight of the foreign population in Portugal has increased in the last decade since in 2013 it corresponded to a percentage of 8.7%. However, the increase observed at the national level over the last ten years (2.1%) was significantly below that which occurred in the average of OECD countries, which was 3%, having gone from 11.7% in 2013 to 14. 7% in 2023.
Luxembourg, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand and Austria lead, in this order, the top five countries where the weight of the population born abroad is greatest.
