The “action will begin at Alameda, from where participants will travel by public transport to Lisbon airport”, where, “in a peaceful and creative way, they will disrupt peak flight times, exposing the fragility of a system that depends on burning fossil fuels to function”, says Climáximo.

According to Inês Teles, spokesperson for Climáximo, “governments and companies refuse to change course, but the past proves that, together, it is possible to stop seemingly untouchable forces”.

“Together, we have the power to dismantle the fossil fuel system and build a more rooted, fair and sustainable society,” the leader said in a statement, considering that the objective of this protest is to demonstrate the strength of citizens.

With what it classifies as a “popular sit-in”, Climáximo wants to “interrupt the normal operation of Lisbon airport and demand the immediate cancellation of new issuing projects, such as the airport expansion and the new airport” in the capital.

In return, the movement demands “the creation of electrified public transport, which is free and accessible to all people”.

For Climáximo, Humberto Delgado airport “is the most polluting infrastructure in the country and a reflection of the touristification that has made the city uninhabitable”.

"While the collapse around us becomes increasingly palpable, with floods, cyclones and fires resembling scenes from horror films, the Portuguese government gives the green light to airport expansion, guaranteeing profits for fossil fuel companies at the cost of death and misery of millions of people”, accuses Inês Teles.

For the leader, it is not possible to “accept this suicidal plan” and it is necessary to “act to stop aviation and the fossil industry and build a future in which all people can live with dignity”.

In contrast, Climáximo “proposes a plan to dismantle commercial, military and cargo aviation, advocating the immediate elimination of short-haul flights, such as Lisbon-Porto, and private jets, considered to be superfluous and unnecessary”.

The movement also calls for “the creation of fair and clean alternatives, such as the expansion of railways and free and electrified public transport for all people.”
