Luís Montenegro took advantage of the period of responses to the CDS-PP during the biweekly debate to leave “a challenge to parliament and in particular to the Socialist Party”.
Since there are “many more things agreed upon in this policy, it was important that there were conditions in parliament to fulfil two objectives that were denied when the PS did not have this position”.
Luís Montenegro asked the PS if it was “in a position to overcome the objections it had” and follow “a more agile return regime for those who are in an illegal situation”.
The challenge also extended to the creation of the Foreigners and Borders Unit in the PSP.
Arguing that “it is necessary to implement the policy that the PS defends today”, the Prime Minister questioned whether the Socialists are available “to be able to approve this constitution in the PSP’s organic structure”.
“These are two questions that deserve a response and a responsible assessment by the PS”, he argued.
Montenegro welcomed the PS's most recent position on immigration and considered it "very important" to "give predictability and durability to policies in the area of immigration, to be able to provide better reception, to be able to give more dignity to integration processes and to be able to value more the work capacity of people who seek" Portugal.
In response to the centrist parliamentary leader, the head of the PSD/CDS-PP executive also said that the action plan to speed up the conclusion of the 400,000 pending immigrant regularisation processes “already has 80% of its measures in execution”.
“417,000 people have already been notified and 215,000 have already been assisted, the process has already come to an end for 8,000 and we now foresee an exponential increase in this area in the near future”, he added.
Luís Montenegro also indicated that the mission structure currently has “450 employees, plus 150 lawyers, a number that will soon be doubled”.
