According to a source from the National Emergency and Civil
Protection Authority, at 10:20 am, 349 operatives remained on site, aided by
121 land assets and one air asset.
The fire broke out at 23:30 on Tuesday near the Gambelas hub
of the University of Algarve (parish of Montenegro) and the premises where, as
of today, the Faro International Motorcycle Gathering takes place, reaching a
perimeter of 27 kilometres. The fire then passed to the municipality of Loulé.
During the day of Wednesday, in the most critical phase of
the firefighting, around 150 people were evacuated in the area.
The Government decided today to extend the state of
contingency in mainland Portugal from Friday to Sunday due to weather
forecasts, with temperatures expected to exceed 45º in some parts of the
country.
