Hotels in the Algarve recorded an overall average occupancy
rate of 36.9% in January, the highest rate for month in the last 20 years.
According to provisional data released by the Associação dos
Hotéis e Empreendimentos Turísticos do Algarve (AHETA) in the summary of the
monthly evolution of activity in the sector, the 36.9% figure is close to the
percentage reached in 2000 (40.3% ) and 2001 (37.5%).
The occupancy rate per room in January 2023 was 3.8 pp
(percentage points) above that seen in the same month of 2019 (the year before
the start of the covid-19 pandemic) and 2.6 pp above that of 2020 (one month
before the start of the pandemic).
Compared to January 2022, occupancy per room in the first
month of the current year rose by 11.7 pp.
According to the association, the Irish (+1.0 pp) and
British (+0.4 pp) markets were the ones that most contributed to the rise.
AHETA also points out that the Dutch, Belgian and Canadian
markets registered “important increases” compared to 2019.
By geographical area, the biggest increases compared to 2019 occurred in the areas of Tavira (+18 pp), Faro/Olhão (+13.2 pp), and Vilamoura/Quarteira/Quinta do Lago (+11.5 pp).
And to help these high tourist numbers virtually every restaurant in our town is closed. We see tourists coming out of the hotel looking for places to eat and there aren’t any
