The study by Bounce analysed factors such as the overall number of litres consumed by each country, along with how many litres on average a person consumes, to reveal the top 10 countries with the highest wine consumption worldwide.
Portugal consumes 600 million litres of wine a year, which is less than nations such as France and Italy overall, but the most when measured per person at 58 litres.
Wine is an integral part of Portuguese culture, with a long history of winemaking that stretches back thousands of years and this puts Portugal as the leading consumer of wine in the world.
Italy is known as the birthplace of some of the world's most celebrated wines, with a vinicultural history spanning thousands of years, back to ancient civilizations. The country has the largest wine production, perhaps making it no shock that 39 litres per person are consumed, putting Italy in second place.
In third place is France, another country known for its winemaking and considered one of the most influential and prestigious wine-producing countries in the world. French wines have consistently been regarded among the greatest, so naturally it's taken advantage of with 37 litres of wine consumed per person, placing France 3rd position.
But that's only just over 1 liter in a week. Thats nothing. Most of my friend consume about 4 liters a week.

How do they calculate this? How can they tell the difference between tourists drinking wine and locals? I despise these rubbish headlines. It should say Portugal sells enough wine to equate to 58 bottles a head per year, but we have no idea how much is drank by tourists vs locals, and we know Richard friend in Madeira are drinking more than their fair share.

The problem is the cheap Portuguese wine is too good for the price. I buy the expensive stuff at €5-12/bottle. Coming from California, the wines are a ripoff there. Here you get crazy good wines, unique varietals found nowhere else and good prices. No wonder the Portuguese don't bother with beer!
