The Algarve Platform of Brotherhoods (PAC) is reinforcing its position in representing 11 regional gastronomic and wine guilds and promoting the Mediterranean Diet’s heritage. Gonçalo Mesquita, from the Gastronomic Brotherhood of Serra do Caldeirão, now leads PAC, which was founded in 2020 to coordinate events and unify Algarve brotherhoods, increasing cultural and culinary collaboration across Portugal.

Gonçalo Mesquita emphasised that PAC is an “informal movement”, not a formal legal entity, focused on supporting the Algarve’s growing network of brotherhoods. Over the past decade, the number of these groups has expanded from four to 11, including two non-native guilds, Moamba and Vinho Verde, which have established a presence in the region.

As he noted, “With the increase in responsibilities and efforts by these brotherhoods, we’ve naturally taken on a larger role in promoting and valuing the Algarve’s brotherhood scene, which is much more than just groups gathering to enjoy local cuisine”.

Beyond its participation in events and discussions, the platform is committed to supporting existing brotherhoods and assisting in the formation of new ones. Gonçalo Mesquita identified four potential brotherhoods that could represent key regional identities, including Batata-Doce from Aljezur, Laranja from Silves, Polvo from Santa Luzia (Tavira), and Sal from Castro Marim.

“We’re focused on supporting these initiatives and ensuring they come to fruition as quickly as possible”, Gonçalo Mesquita shared, acknowledging that while some are still in their early stages, Sal de Castro Marim is the most advanced. Among the 11 brotherhoods represented by PAC are the Serra do Caldeirão, Ria Formosa Navy, Sardine Brotherhood of Portimão, and Bacchus Brotherhood of Albufeira. Mesquita views these groups as essential for preserving and promoting the Algarve’s gastronomic and wine heritage.

"The recognition we’re gaining is a sign of our increasing role as a defender of the region's food and wine culture," he said, adding that PAC aims to unite the region’s brotherhoods without creating divisions.
