However the number of people who actually exercise enough every day varies greatly. There is no country in Europe where the majority of adults walk or cycle for at least 30 minutes a day. However, according to data from Langeist.com, there is one country that comes close to this: the Netherlands - 44% of adults walk or cycle at least 30 minutes a day - which has by far the highest percentage of all European countries.
Slovakia (25.4%) and Denmark (25.3%) also stand out. In both countries, more than a quarter of the adult population walks or cycles at least 30 minutes a day. These three countries also have a lower obesity rate than other European countries.
It is interesting to see that the percentage is lower as we move towards southern Europe (with the exception of Iceland). Spain (5.5%), Turkey (3.4%), Portugal (2.8%), Malta (2.3%) and Cyprus (0.1%) are at the bottom of the table: they have by far the lowest percentage of adults who walk or cycle at least 30 minutes per day.
Cold wind and hills is the answer.

We live in the interior, the streets are highways without sidewalks. Going out for a walk is like playing russian roulette.

Portugal does not provide enough suitable places to walk. You can't even walk along a road without taking your life in your hands. Why on earth would you wish to do it for pleasure? You can't even cross the road without some idiot trying to run you over on a pedestrian crossing.

Well, if there would be suitable walkpaths, I would walk more. Or cycle more. As others mentioned, it is gamble if you decide to walk along the road that has never considered walking an option.

I would love to see more dedicated and safe cycling paths built like the one above Cascais. Why not make that a category that golden visa investors can invest in for the obvious, visible betterment of all?

Why should you walk if you can double park for the shop you have to be!

We are the laziest and most car dependable country of Europe. Everything is an excuse for not walking or cycling. Even for taking public transportation
