According to the page 'Meteo Trás os Montes - Portugal', the incident occurred late this Sunday afternoon. Several people reported and shared images of the smoke trail, which they called a "fireball".
According to the comments in the publication, the meteorite explosion was seen in different areas of the country, such as Trancoso, Portalegre, Penafiel, Batalha, Vila Nova de Gaia or Peso da Régua.
I clearly saw this deep in traffic approaching the Ponte 25 de Abril westbound just before sunset. It travelled vertically downwards, like a shooting star but about 10 times as big, half as fast, and obviously much closer. And it's not the first I've witnessed in the last couple of years (I videoed one over the skies of the Linha). They seem to be more frequent and yet barely get covered in the news, almost normalised.
