The status was awarded by the ‘Green Destinations Foundation’, which recognizes sustainable approaches towards tourism. The award indicates that the tourist destination's adherence to environmental, cultural, economic, social, and management standards have been met. “This award is great recognition for the sustainable approach that the region has towards tourism”, Cascais’ Tourism has acknowledge in a statement.
Luís Almeida Capão, Municipal Director of Environment and Sustainability at Cascais City Council has stated that “This award recognizes Cascais as a destination with great environmental quality, not only for what it offers to those who visit us but, above all, for the involvement of the entire community in the development of environmentally fair solutions for the people who live here”. The “Platinum” status is granted to travel destinations that adhere to a specific ethical code which rigorously monitors tourism, and which have specific sustainability indicators in the tourism sector.
Cascais Tourism remembers that the destination has been recognised with multiple honours and certifications throughout the years, including the QualityCoast Gold award in 2021 and the QualityCoast Silver award in 2013. These distinctions demonstrate Cascais's unwavering dedication to sustainability. As Luís Capão mentioned “Cascais aims to be the best place to live for a day, a week or a lifetime, and that is why we have increased the area of green spaces, the number of trees planted and we have seen an increase in biodiversity, both in protected and urban areas”.
