On 1 May it cost 235.19 euros, 0.47 euros less than a week ago (-0.20%). Compared to the beginning of 2024, the basket is 0.89 euros cheaper.
However, if we look at the same period last year, the increase is 12.57 euros, and even greater, 51.56 euros, if we compare it with the essential food basket price before the start of the war in Ukraine.
Spaghetti price hike
Looking at the last week, between April 24th and May 1st, the products that had increased the most in price were the following: sliced bread (13%), spaghetti (12%), cauliflower (11%), extra virgin olive oil (7% – plus 73 cents), flavoured yogurt (7%), whole grains (6%), cooking oil (5%), golden apple (4 %), eggs (4%), boneless pork loin (4%).
Looking at product categories, the biggest percentage increases since the start of the war were recorded in supermarkets (37.79%, plus 16.77 euros), and fish (30.53%, plus 18.41 euros).
Greatest price increase since last year
Comparing the prices of last week's basket, with the same set of products purchased a year ago, it can be seen that the following products registered the greatest increase in price: Extra virgin olive oil (68%), tuna in olive oil (34%), fresh hake (28%), cauliflower (27%), orange (25%), gala apple (22%), broccoli ( 16%), sea bream (16%), spaghetti (15%), courgette (15%).
Looking at prices, for example, a bottle of olive oil increased by more than four euros (from 6.66 to 11.21 euros), while oranges (price per kilo) rose by 0.33 euros in the same period.
Olive oil, hake, and onion have had the biggest increases since the start of the war in Ukraine. Comparing the prices of last week's basket, with the same set of products purchased on February 23, 2022, before the conflict in Ukraine, it appears that the following products registered the biggest price increases: extra virgin olive oil (141%), fresh hake (87%), onion (80%), salmon (69%), tomato pulp (64%), white sugar (63%), red potato (58%), cereal (57%), Carolina rice (56%) and oranges (54%).
