The trend of production growth in this sector has been maintained since 2017, says the study, adding that, in 2023, the value of production grew 7.5% compared to the previous year, which was partly due to the increase in prices.
In real terms, production in the construction sector in the country registered a growth of 3.4% in 2023, compared to the previous year, highlights the study.
The civil engineering segment grew 5% in 2023, while residential construction and non-residential construction showed growth rates of 3% and 0.7%, respectively.
In the case of the number of dwellings in completed buildings of new construction, it has maintained an upward trend since 2016, totalling around 21,500 in 2023, 6.8% more than in the previous year.
Employment generated by the sector grew by 6.4% in 2023, to 344 thousand workers corresponding to 6.9% in relation to the total number of workers in Portugal.
In April this year, the number of construction companies in Portugal slightly exceeded 66,300, around 4,400 more than in the same month of the previous year. In geographical terms, the districts of Lisbon and Porto concentrated, respectively, 21.3% and 14.8% of companies with licenses.
