In a thank you note published on the Lisbon Metropolitan Command Facebook page, the driver revealed that he was "the victim of a situation" that "could have had tragic consequences" if the officer, identified as Marco Tavares, had not intervened.
The incident occurred on line 79B, which runs through Algés, when the driver was "threatened by a passenger carrying a weapon" and had to stop the vehicle to protect himself and the "passengers on board" at 8:00 pm.
"Officer Marco Tavares, even though he was far from the scene, quickly became aware of the conflict and, with impressive efficiency and speed, went to the scene to provide assistance," said the driver, adding that, "thanks to the police officer's quick and decisive intervention," "the aggressor fled, avoiding a potentially disastrous outcome."
The man also praised the officer's "courage and professionalism" in dealing with the situation. "His performance was essential to guarantee the safety of everyone involved. His exemplary performance reflects the commitment and dedication of public safety professionals, ensuring the protection and tranquillity of our community," he wrote.
The thank you note does not, however, explain when the incident occurred.
