"We are warning about the sending of fraudulent messages in the name of Social Security. The messages allow their authors to illegitimately obtain amounts resulting from supposed debts to Social Security", reads the Social Security website.

According to the entity, "these messages are fraudulent and are not sent by Social Security" and, if any of the victims have amounts owed, "communication of these situations must be confirmed with Social Security services".

Social Security highlighted that it "does not send SMS with references for payment of amounts due".
