In a statement, Zero refers to the most recent measurements, carried out last December, which “point to noise peaks in homes close to” the aerodrome, at “values considered extremely high and with serious disruption to the public health of the surrounding populations”.
The airfield – located in Tires, in the parish of São Domingos de Rana, with almost 60 thousand inhabitants – operates normally between 7am and midnight, already registering “a high number of aircraft movements”, especially jet planes.
Quoting the Cascais Dinâmica Municipal Company, Zero highlights “an annual average of four low-flying flights per hour over densely populated areas and much more than that at certain times of the day”.
In 2023, according to the same source, “approximately 47,000 aircraft movements (landings and take-offs) will have been recorded”, with “particularly worrying (…) the 17% increase in air taxi flights” compared to 2022.
“Many of these flights are in jet aircraft, which are noisier,” observes Zero, criticizing the replacement of aerodrome flying schools with executive transport.
Zero is concerned about the Government's announcement to transfer executive aviation from Humberto Delgado Airport to Cascais Municipal Aerodrome.
At the same time, private jet movements between Humberto Delgado Airport and Cascais Aerodrome are already considered “the second most carbon dioxide-intensive route in Europe”.
Meanwhile, Cascais City Council announced that it will open a public tender for the concession and operation of Cascais Municipal Aerodrome, which includes extending the runway (which is currently 1,400 meters long).
In this regard, Zero recalls that, according to current legislation, the extension of an airfield runway beyond 1,500 meters in length requires an individualized process that involves an environmental impact assessment and the application of measures such as acoustic insulation of the housing.
For the association, “it is also essential to rethink the continued operation of the airfield in Tires from the moment the new Lisbon airport is opened and Humberto Delgado Airport is closed”.
