Mercadona's expansion plan in Portugal continues and the Spanish retail chain expects to open, in 2023, 10 new supermarkets, the first of which, in May, in Marco de Canaveses.

"As we are about to complete four years since the first opening in Portugal, and with a view to continuing our expansion project, Mercadona will investment 280 million euros in 2023 intended for the construction of the future Logistic Block of Almeirim and the opening of new stores", reads a statement sent to the newsrooms.

The brand's first store in Lisbon will open in Lumiar, specifically in a building in Quinta do Lambert, which will have two floors and a commercial area of 3,422 square meters (m2). The Lisbon store is not among the new openings planned for 2023, even so, it appears that the proposal submitted to the municipality has already been approved.

Where will the new Mercadona supermarkets be?

These are the next cities to receive a Mercadona supermarket in the country: Marco de Canaveses; Braga; Lousada; Gondomar; Seixal (Corroios); Sintra (Mercês and Massamá); Torres Vedras; Vila Franca de Xira (Alverca) and Figueira da Foz (the first in the district of Coimbra).

The company will end the year with 49 supermarkets in Portugal. In addition, the new stores will create around 650 new jobs throughout the year.
