European countries are where emigrants and foreigners that most request mortgage loans to buy a house in Portugal come from according to a report by idealista.
People living in the United Kingdom (19% of total requests), Brazil (13%), Switzerland (10%) and France (9%) stand out in the study.
But it is families coming from the US who have greater purchasing power and want to buy more expensive homes in the country. Those who live on the other side of the Atlantic have an average income of 8,208 euros and consider purchasing homes in Portugal, on average, for 297,320 euros. And, to do so, they submitted higher-value home loan applications (over 200,000 euros).
In second place are families residing in the Netherlands. With an average monthly income of 6,114 euros, these households want to buy houses for an average value of 236,011 euros, requesting a mortgage of 183,576 euros. And in third place are non-resident citizens from Switzerland, who are interested in purchasing homes for 214,035 euros, asking banks, on average, 153,481 euros.
The worst thing to happen to the country. Shameful!!!!!!!!!

Not really J; there is plenty that is indeed shameful in Portugal - the garbage on the streets, how people abuse animals, how doctors and teachers are treated and underpaid, how there is practically no public health care service which works, the worst housing in Europe, the worst drivers in Europe, no safe, clean, green spaces for people to have healthy exercise and the list is endless. Now, the socialists even want to import foreigners to join the national army .....

Correct, J. Everyone should be as unsuccessful as you. Cut down all the trees so none are taller than others! Brilliant solution to a non-problem. It's really amazing how much you complain about nonsense on these pages.

J, please stop with the dramatic commentary. The worst thing to have happened to the country was a brutal dictatorship that stripped people of money, rights and autonomy, not someone from the United States buying property. There is no shame in an American buying a house in Portugal considering the Portuguese are the ones selling them and benefitting from it. No one forced any Portuguese citizen to set the prices for their properties, and no one from the U.S. buying a place should be made to feel badly because they come from a wealthy country who can afford it. Are you up in arms over the Chinese who are nearly as wealthy buying up chunks of commercial real estate in Portugal? If not, then you are being a hypocrite trying to blame Americans simply because you find it fashionable to do so.

What a crock! Where did you get those bogus average US income numbers? First, Americans are paid in $ not €. Secondly, those numbers didn’t come from any official source like the US Census Bureau. Here’s an article that dives into what average US salaries actually are. https://www.forbes.com/advisor/business/average-salary-by-state/ Stop with all the anti-American hate bait articles. There are only 10K American immigrants in Portugal. They rank 20th in number of immigrants per latest SEF report and are a much smaller immigrant population in Portugal than citizens from Brazil or the UK.

@Brian: Spot on, thank you for your comment. Tired of people trying to make this country out to be the worst in the world, and the grass is always greener over there. Yes, we do have problems, we have ours, other countries have theirs. All in all I would say Portugal comes out rather positively, just visit and talk to people from other countries with an open mind. The rest of the world is not a sea of roses and this country is not a pit hole. One of its worst problems though has to do with a small but vocal minority: small mindedness.
