According to Luís Filipe Araújo, the most worrying situation is now in the Branzelo area, in Melres, with “a fire front that arrived at dawn from Aguiar de Sousa [municipality of Paredes] and which joins the one that has been burning in Jovim since Monday”.
“There are small rekindlings in several places, in the cases of São Pedro de Cova and Foz do Sousa, in addition to the very strong winds and we expect that this will continue”, added the mayor.
Given the concentration of smoke in the air, the Porto district council has decided to close “all schools in the upper part of the municipality” today.
Luís Filipe Araújo, meanwhile, lamented the “great shortage of resources”, particularly air resources, to fight the flames in Gondomar, stressing that with more resources “it would be easier to stop the spread of the flames”.
According to the website of the Porto Metropolitan Area Sub-Regional Command, at 9:00 am there were 242 operational personnel and 54 land resources on the ground in the municipality.
The GNR command also provided an update and the closures on the A43 motorway in both directions in the Gondomar area remain in place, as well as the ban on traffic between the A41 and the A43 and A4 junctions.
