We knit and crochet, drink tea or coffee, chat, share yarn and needles and patterns, and tell stories about children and grandchildren. We create socks, blankets, teddies, sweaters, hats, all the while setting the world to rights.

We started in February 2011, just two or three of us, meeting in different cafes, joined by another few crafting friends, before settling on the Food Court. A few months later, a letter was sent to The Portugal News and two or three weeks later, there were 15 of us. Husbands came along as well, and had their own table nearby, though none of them ever helped with crafting.

One of the team has a personal connection to Faro Hospital and is informed what is most needed by various departments - small hats, socks, blankies for the premature baby unit; bed socks, blankets or shawls for different wards and care homes; and trauma teddies which are distributed to all emergency services vehicles. In addition, we are occasionally asked for financial help, and have provided funds for special footwear, televisions and other equipment.

We also teach various skills. One non-crafter was delighted to find friends as well as a new hobby, and within a year was crocheting blankets for the hospital. Another lady learned how to knit socks, and her husband is still wearing them. We also knit and crochet for friends and charities worldwide, sharing the woolly joy.

Unfortunately, several of our long-time members have had to leave the Algarve, and health issues prevent others from coming along every week. We therefore hope to welcome new members. There is no charge, just a smile. We usually have yarn and needles or hooks to share, and loads of pattern ideas.

Every Thursday morning, from about 9.30 - noon, Food Court, Algarve Shopping.
