According to NiT, the first prize went to the bolo-rei from Pastelaria Moinho Novo, in Tentúgal.
This special king cake is prepared with an exclusive recipe from the bakery, which opened in 2017. The sweet dough contains walnuts, almonds, pine nuts and a mixture of liqueurs.
José Carlos Faria, owner of Pastelaria Moinho Novo, is responsible for the sweets that are only sold there. “We use all traditional ingredients and make everything as natural as possible”, he revealed to NiT.
The award-winning bolo-rei is available for €19 or by the slice at the bakery in Tentúgal, but to ensure you have “the best” on your Christmas table, it’s best to make a reservation.
Other winners of the competition include the bolo-rei from A Mina da Estação Padaria e Pastelaria, in São João da Madeira, and the one from the bakery Esmeralda Gouveia — Doces do Coração, in Santana do Mato.
Pastelaria Moinho Novo shared their delight on Facebook, ""A cake that many of you enjoy and that reminds us of traditions and family moments... Rich in nuts and candied fruits, it is indeed delicious!
"We also remember the recognition of this cake as the Best King Cake in Portugal at the VIII ACIP Competition on 28 November, 2021."
