According to the website: “Pastel de Belém is a traditional Portuguese egg custard tart and the predecessor to the famous pastel de nata. Made with a flaky pastry shell and a creamy filling of milk, eggs, sugar, lemon, and cinnamon, it dates back to 1837 when it was created by the monks of the Jerónimos Monastery.
“Only the tarts produced at Fábrica Pastéis de Belém can carry the name Pastel de Belém, while others are referred to as pastel de nata. Best enjoyed hot or cold, this iconic pastry was listed among the 50 best things to eat by The Guardian in 2009”.
